How to Bow?

Post  Jennifer on Sun Jan 23, 2011 6:01 pm

I just cannot seem to teach this to Jasper. He can bow if I put my hand underneath him, just not on his own. Any ideas?

I can't get Shiloh to bow either. She always lays all the way down. I haven't tried putting my hand under her though....

I know that this thread is old, but other people may be looking for ways to teach bow:
With Bilbo, I took the clicker and lured him into a down. When his butt was in the air, I clicked. You have to be careful with timing, because clicking when your dog is down is just going to reinforce the down and not the bow.

I finally got Shiloh to bow, but she won't really stay.... I'll tell her stay but she'll stand up... Should I just keep getting her to bow longer?

You can get her to bow longer by witholding the marker for a second, and then another, and then another, etc, etc. It's kind of like reteaching the stay in a whole new position; with the stay, you didn't ask for the dog to stay for five minutes right away. You slowly increased the time and you'd do the same for the bow.

I think my dog knows how to sit by repeating and repeating the sitting position then giving her a reward after he has done it. I think you only need patience to have your dog bow. Smile

To do so reliably? Yes, practice is what will get your dog reliable.

To hold the bow longer and longer? Depends on how you practice. If I practed my stay by having Bilbo hold it for only a minute, he may very well get up after that minute, or he'll get twitchy and agitated when I start asking for five, ten, etc.

I'll try it. Right when she gets it and I try to make her hold it, she starts laying down. Evil or Very Mad I have to take breaks or I'll go nuts.
