What is a Personal Protection Dog?
Personal Protection Training is a very specialized form of training which should only be attempted with a professional trainer. Protection trained dogs are in greater demand now than ever before. These dogs can be trained to protect you, your family, your home, car, business or all of the above. Unfortunately there are a lot of misconceptions about the training methods and the resulting dog… It is not true that protection or guard dogs are mean, vicious, unruly animals. It is not true that you must starve or beat the dog to make it bite, in fact the result will be a cowardly dog. It is very rarely true that dogs naturally know how to protect you. Some dogs may be more keen than others but faced with a real threat they may look to you to protect them. After all you are the dog's provider!
There are certain breeds that come to mind when people hear "watch dog" or "guard dog" and certainly there are some breeds that perform better than others. The breeds most thought of would probably include the German Shepherd, the Dobermann, and the Rottweiler, and certainly we have seen good representatives of these breeds, but we have also seen some bad ones. There are many other breeds that make excellent personal protection dogs, would you believe the Labrador Retriever? Or the Standard Poodle? Or for that matter a mutt! Both males and females can be trained to protect. In fact, started properly almost any dog can become an asset to personal or property security, and at the same time be loving, fun and reliable family pets.
A personal protection dog is not a police dog, nor is it a sport dog. There are sports out there that teach the dog to bite, such as Schutzhund, and French Ring Sport, but these dogs are learning to attack the equipment in a specific exercise. They can not be relied upon to protect in a real life situation! Not to say they can't learn to, but if you think because your dog is in Schutzhund training, that he will stop a thief from coming into your home, you could be risking the lives of your family and your dog.
A personal protection dog is a family pet that is taught to read and respond to body language, alert you to sounds, or work independently to protect its domain, be that a car, house, yard, etc. A personal protection dog is a responsibility.

Re: What is a Personal Protection Dog?
Great Post SMB
Also smb I would like to add. That if you plan on getting a dog trained to be Personal Protection Dog think first before doing so. Though they do make great guard dogs the only problem is that certain dogs have higher prey drives then others. So if you have small children they may be attacked as prey if they move to fast. So think first before doing this!

Re: What is a Personal Protection Dog?
Can a Labrador retriever be a Protection Dog? I've always wondered if a kind dog like that can protect owners from thieves.
